If you have unfortunately made the mistake of locking your keys inside your vehicle, nothing will feel more important to you than trying to gain entry. There are a few steps you can take to ensure your safety while you are locked out of your vehicle as well as a few things you can try to get inside.

Note The Area

Check the area where the incident has occurred to see if you feel safe. If you are not near your home or if you are unfamiliar with your surroundings, it would be best to call 911 to have a police officer assist you with your lock out troubles. They will be able to wait with you if you need to call someone for help.

Check The Trunk

Some vehicles have a latch inside the interior that will allow you to crawl through to the back seat. If your trunk is unlocked, you will be able to check to see if your vehicle is equipped with this safety feature.

Unlatching Automatic Locks

If you have a vehicle with automatic locks, you may be able to gain entry by using a wire coat hanger. You would need to be near a store or someone's house so you could find a coat hanger to try this method. Disassemble the hanger by untwisting the wire at the base and straighten it so it forms a long metal rod. Use a putty knife, door stop, or another flat item to use as a wedge between your door and the frame of the vehicle. Place this above the window. Push the rod into the vehicle in the gap the wedge creates.

You will need to maneuver the hanger so it is in a position to push on the small button near the door, unlocking it as a result. If you do not have a coat hanger available, you may be able to use your car's antennae if you can unscrew it from your car's body.

Unlatching Manual Locks

Manual locks can be opened in the same method as automatic loc

ks, however, you will be doing a pulling motion instead of a pushing one. This will take a little time to get the right angle. Bend the end of a coat hanger to form a small loop. Try to lasso the locking pin with the looped end of the hanger and pull in an upward motion to disengage.

Make Some Calls

The best way to get your vehicle unlocked if you cannot do it on your own, is to call a professional auto locksmith. They will have the tools available to get into different makes and models and will let you know when you call if they believe they will be able to get inside or if you will need to find an alternate method. A locksmith will get to you right away so you are not left waiting outdoors for long.

Another call you can try making if the occurrence happens during daytime hours is to a local auto dealership. They may be able to get you a new key made for your vehicle. Unfortunately, some dealerships will need to send out for this service, making a locksmith a better choice if you do not have time to wait to get back inside your vehicle.
